Theatre Arts

The theatre represents one of the most humanizing disciplines of the arts. Its practice requires a committed, integrated effort which expands the mind, the heart, and the spirit. It touches in some way upon every other subject taught on the university campus. It emphasizes the value of life itself, countering the materiality of the contemporary world. While this is the "ends" of theatre, our department exists also to teach the "means." The art and craft of the legitimate stage are joined together in acting, stagecraft, literature, history, dance, vocal techniques, playwriting, and the many forms of design, from costumes and makeup through scenery, lighting, and sound.
