Creative Writing / English

We offer a nurturing community. At some schools, faculty seal themselves off from students. Not here. We pride ourselves in mentoring students so that they can achieve the kind of technical and intellectual skills that we associate with the best creative writing. They are challenged to write everything from sonnets to experimental lyric essays, free-verse poetry to “braided essays,” microfiction to traditionally plotted short fiction. We are steeped in rich literary tradition: poet May Swenson and prose writer Rick Bass were both USU graduates. It was current Utah poet laureate Ken Brewer, a long-time professor and mentor, who proffered our belief about mentoring that “if we ask them to leap into the sea, we must be willing to leap with them”.
